Tourism

Tourism is an important economy in Kainuu: the region’s tourism industry is the third biggest in Finland after Lapland and the Åland Islands. The development of the tourism industry is a vital factor for Kainuu and at the same time it presents great opportunities.

Tourism Strategy Draws on the Regional Strengths

Kainuu, with its eight distinctive municipalities, is a colorful synthesis of pure nature, rich culture and history, a variety of activities, modern services and top expertise in various fields. The countryside and nature in its many varied forms offer a huge range of opportunities. The region is a year-round, safe and diverse destination.

Tourism industry in the region has been on a growth path for several years. The aim is to ensure continued development through close cooperation, investments and continuous development measures. The development of tourism is guided by the Kainuu Tourism Strategy 2024-2028. The strategy seeks growth from year-round tourism in both domestic and foreign markets. This is achieved by improving the region’s accessibility, tourism offerings and marketing, by utilizing digital opportunities, by cooperation between tourism regions and through joint projects.

We believe that there is plenty of unexplored potential in tourism in Kainuu region – also from the real estate perspective. Tourism real estate investment opportunities can be seen on Locations page.

Arctic Lakeland Cooperation

Tourism in Kainuu is organized under the Arctic Lakeland brand, which brings together seven distinct destinations and highlights the region’s unique nature and experiences as part of the broader Lakeland Finland area defined by Visit Finland. The development of the tourism sector is strongly supported by the Regional Council of Kainuu and Kajaani University of Applied Sciences, both of which play a key role in regional development and innovation.
